AI in Interior Design: Enhancing Creativity and Efficiency

Hi Designers! Welcome back to the AI for Interior Designers podcast. I'm Jenna Gaidusek, and today, I’m excited to share my journey of integrating AI into my interior design workflow. As professionals in the design industry, we find ourselves at various stages of adopting AI—some are skeptical, others fully onboard, and many are somewhere in between. The key is finding what works best for you and your business goals. Let's dive in and explore how AI can transform our design processes!

Finding Balance with AI

In my virtual design practice, AI has proven to be a game-changer, enhancing communication and efficiency. However, there are still aspects I prefer to manage personally, either due to current technological limitations or simply because I enjoy them. It’s about striking the right balance and determining where AI fits into your workflow.

For those who are hesitant, remember that AI is likely already a part of your toolkit, subtly embedded in software like Grammarly or even in your text messaging apps. It’s not about replacing your creativity but streamlining processes for improved client communication and project management.

My Virtual Collaboration Walkthrough

Let’s delve into my virtual collaboration process. Whether working with a local client or a remote project, the initial consultation is crucial. It sets the stage for understanding the client's needs and the space we're working with. My client onboarding questionnaire, powered by Typeform since 2016, collects detailed information to guide the design process.

  1. Custom-Built Design Assistant GPT

This is where my custom-built design assistant GPT comes into play. It takes raw data from the initial call, notes, and questionnaire, and organizes it into a coherent project brief. This AI-generated outline is not only visually appealing but also categorizes and bullet-points ideas, making the next steps more streamlined.

  2. Project Management with Max

For project management, I utilize my Mydoma Studio's AI assistant, Max, which creates a comprehensive project profile in minutes. It organizes client information, sets up folders for product categories, and prepares media sections for before-and-after photos, construction documents, and more.

  3. Conceptual Imagery

The next step is conceptual imagery. Here, AI helps me create mood boards and flat lays that resonate with my clients' preferences. I use DALL-E and Midjourney to generate and refine these images, ensuring they align with the project’s vision before moving on to concept development.

  4. Concept Development and Sourcing

Concept development involves sourcing and selecting the right pieces for the space. I leverage my private label collection for customizable furniture and my print-on-demand collection for unique decor. For other items, I turn to online sources, sometimes with affiliate links, other times not, depending on the project's needs.

AI Enhancing the Design Process

Throughout the process, I use AI to optimize and streamline, from generating budget breakdowns with my Budget Buddy GPT to creating realistic renderings and concept boards. AI does not replace my role as a designer; it enhances it, allowing me to focus on delivering the best design with the least resistance.

Takeaways

AI is a powerful tool that, when used ethically and with clear goals, can significantly enhance our work as interior designers. It’s not about fearing replacement but embracing enhancement. As we continue to explore AI’s potential, let’s remain open to its possibilities and the ways it can elevate our profession.

Until next time, keep innovating, keep designing, and keep sharing your unique perspectives with the world. Don’t forget to follow and subscribe for more insights on AI in interior design. See you in the next episode!

Warm regards,
